Laurel Court System & Jurisdictions

Laurel County operates two main levels of state courts — Circuit Court and District Court. Both are located in the Laurel County Judicial Center in the city of London.

Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction. It handles:

  • Criminal cases for felonies
  • Civil claims over $5,000
  • Divorce, custody, and adoption cases (Family Court in Kentucky functions as a division of Circuit Court)
  • Appeals from District Court decisions

Real estate cases, high-value contracts, and injunctions also fall here.

District Court handles a broader range of everyday cases:

  • Misdemeanors and violations of local ordinances
  • Traffic offenses
  • Small Claims — civil disputes up to $2,500
  • Preliminary hearings in criminal cases
  • Probate cases — will approvals, executor appointments
  • Involuntary psychiatric treatment

If you are unsure which court your case belongs to, call the clerk's office — they will guide you in the right direction.

How to Get a Copy of a Laurel Court Document

The Circuit Court Clerk's office is the only place where copies of county court documents are issued. There are two types of copies:

  • Certified copy — has the clerk's seal and signature, legally confirming the document's authenticity. Required for submission to other courts, government agencies, or when processing real estate.
  • Uncertified copy — a regular printout for personal review.

You can obtain a copy in three ways:

  1. In person. Visit the office at the Laurel County Judicial Center. You will need the case number or the full name of the party and the approximate filing date.
  2. By mail. Send a written request with case details and a check or money order to the address:

Note: County Clerk and Circuit Court Clerk are different institutions. Court files (criminal, civil, family) are stored by the Circuit Court Clerk.

Certain records have restricted access. Juvenile cases, sealed criminal cases, and some family documents are usually not issued without court permission. If you are unsure whether a document is public, ask the clerk directly.
